Quality book case furniture looks good and lasts a long time. Don't settle for book case furniture that you assemble yourself with screws and plastic hardware, especially if it is made mostly of MDF. MDF is heavy like wood, but if stressed the screws will pop out taking part of the MDF with them. Any type of book case furniture, or any furniture of any type that is constructed this way, will eventually fall apart.
Book Case or book case? Regardless of how you spell it, these terms refer to a particular type of furniture that is today essentially a decorative, semi-portable shelf system. Whether you use a bookcase to store books or other items, a quality, well finished solid wood book case adds a sense of dignity and a touch of class to any room in the home.
Book Case Furniture In Days Gone By
Book case furniture was developed early in the history of modern furniture, to protect and store books, which were considered much more valuable in times past than they are today.
In 15th through 19th centuries, books were much more valuable and important than they are today, and in many instances quite scarce. Book case furniture was created to store and display these valuable objects. If you look at the time and effort it took to write, print and distribute books without the use of electronic printing presses, the absence of a reliable and inexpensive delivery system, not to mention that the work was often done by candle-light, you can see that in times past books were indeed very valuable possessions and worthy of their own furniture creations. The size and contents of ones book case was a true symbol of education, wealth and status.
The Modern Bookcase
Today, bookcase furniture is as much a part of decor as it is a useful way to store books. A bookcase in today's home often contains many objects other than books. A book case may actually be used as a shelf system for many purposes, including the storage of books, knick-knacks, figurines, etc.
