According to the Live Oak Society, the largest Oak tree in the USA is in Lewisburg, Mandeville, Lousiana. Known as the "Seven Sisters Oak" it measures 11.27 meters (37 feet and 2 inches) in circumference with a crown spread of 45.72 meters (150 feet). It is said to be over 1,000 years old! The oak family includes about 600 species.
Oak is durable, tough, and attractive, and it is especially valued in construction for flooring, and for making furniture, tool handles, and various furniture veneers. Solid wood oak furniture is highly sought after and often quite expensive. |
